1st and 2nd Battalions, 1st Grenadiers of the Old Guard

I have been working on two battalions of the Old Guard, in this case the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 1st Grenadiers.  These two battalions formed the elite, not only of the French Army but the Imperial Guard itself.

The regiment remained in reserve throughout the battle and is shown around Maison Lacoste to the south of La Belle Alliance.

The figures are a mix of Zvezda and Hinton Hunt with a few others including conversions thrown in.  There are about 1,200 figures shown here; this was a huge amount of work and has left me wishing never to see another Old Guard Grenadier ever again!

Having said that, I have now completed ten battalions of Old and Middle Guard, leaving five to finish.

  1. It's difficult to think of a superlatives that would do these justice, GP. They are the anatomy of glory, without a doubt. The bands, of course, are a particularly glorious!

  2. Thanks WM, your own Hintons are something of an inspiration for many of these.

  3. Another absolutely sensational piece of the diorama. I admire, salute and toast your dedication in painting these hundreds of figures—as well as enjoying the results.
[Pleased to hear that your tongue-in-cheek comment did not last long and you have been able to paint some more Imperial Guard, hahaha.]
Portraying the entire regiment is amazing in itself, but, as ever, you have added marvellous little details and added 'vignettes', c/- you and your team of helpers, which enhance the whole fabulously.
As always, thank you and best regards, James

  4. p.s.
Looking at Matt's comment and your reply reminded me that I meant to mention how great it is to see all the Hinton Hunt's! *That* is special enough in itself.

  5. Thanks James, this lot is mainly me, with a few useful inputs from others. It was hard work to finish this regiment as I have a day job as well.
