Line Artillery

Here are my French Line Artillery, along with various parts of the logistic train, including bridges, supply wagons and ambulances.  Not all of this is complete (the guns need a bit more work), but you get the picture.

What is interesting is to note just how much space artillery took up on the battlefield, once limbers and caissons are taken into account.  Some have six horses, others only four, which by all accounts was the case in 1815.

The figures are converted Hat with Airfix heads, Hinton Hunt and Alberken, Art Miniaturen, Zvezda and the old Airfix figures, which stand the test of time even if the guns and limbers don't.

I have cheated a bit by including my Guard Train but not the Guard Artillery, which I will keep for another day.

Engineers of the Guard

Here are my Engineers of the Guard.  They are mostly Zvezda conversions, with Hinton Hunt, Strelets and a few Airfix.

Carabiniers

Both regiments of Carabiniers were at Waterloo in the same brigade under Baron Blanchard.  They were held back by their commander, who recognised the futility of attacking unbroken British squares, until Ney, angered by their reticence, ordered them into the attack.

My figures are a mixture of Italieri, Airfix, Zvezda, Art Miniaturen, Hinton Hunt, Hat and various others.  I have put a few in cloaks.  The trumpeters ought to be in the post-1812 green livery, but these are in the old light blue.

The Carabiniers had perhaps the most theatrical uniform of the Napoleonic Wars.  I imagine they would have worn grey campaign breeches but have kept them in white.  Given that the campaign occurred at such short notice, perhaps this is not wholly unrealistic.

The Empress's Dragoons

The Empress's Dragoons were a large Regiment at Waterloo and shown prominently in the rotunda. My figures are Hinton Hunt, Italieri, Hat conversions, Kennington, Art Miniaturen, Les Higgins, NapoleoN, and various others.

Mamelukes of the Guard

An order was given for a Mameluke company to reform and join the Chasseurs a Cheval of the Guard for the Waterloo campaign. There is little if any evidence to suggest this ever happened, but here is my Mameluke company as they might have looked. I like the variety of uniforms which adds to the vibrancy of the late Empire period. The figures are Hat, Italieri, Garrison and S Range with a few conversions.

1st Polish Lancers of the Guard

I have finished my Polish Lancer Squadron of two companies. It's a mix of figures (Esci, Zvezda, Hinton Hunt, Les Higgins etc), some of which fit together better than others. On the eventual model they will be arranged so that the more obvious incompatibilities are ironed out. I have an Art Miniaturen pair at the front, one of whom is Prince Poniatowski, who was obviously dead by 1815, so the model represents a senior Polish officer.

There was only one Swiss regiment in L'Armee du Nord, which was with Grouchy, so this Squadron was the only non French unit in Napoleon's Army at Waterloo.
